Greetings,
Welcome to the April edition of the QLetter, your electronic source for NCIDQ news and updates, industry announcements and calls to action.
Certificate Renewal News

NCIDQ is committed to improving the environment and has made great strides in "going green." We have eliminated many paper processes and have moved them online.

Your Certificate renewal is one of those processes that was moved online in late 2007. We no longer send out paper notifications reminding you that it's time to renew. Instead, we now send out e-mail reminders.

Your annual renewal deadline is based upon when you completed the exam (April or October). For some of you, your annual renewal deadline is fast approaching. If you are one of those individuals, you should have already received your first e-mail reminder.

In order to ensure you receive this e-mail, and any other e-mail, always maintain a current e-mail address in MyNCIDQ. Please verify your e-mail address is current in MyNCIDQ and encourage your colleagues to do the same.

If your colleagues have not received their renewal e-mails - remind them to renew online at MyNCIDQ under 'Certificate Renewal' as well as update their e-mail address.
Participate in a Study about Health, Safety, and Welfare!

In the next two weeks, you may be randomly selected to participate in a study.

University of Minnesota professors Denise Guerin and Caren Martin will be collecting information based on your perception of how your interior design knowledge contributes to the public's health, safety and welfare. This survey will be online and will only take about 15 minutes to complete.

Watch for this important invitation. Your response is essential to the completion of the next 'Body of Knowledge' study. The 'Body of Knowledge' study is a research project that NCIDQ contributes to along with the American Society of Interior Designers, the International Interior Design Association, the Interior Designers of Canada, the Interior Design Educators Council and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. It is a major project that affects the interior design profession.

If you receive the survey we appreciate your contribution to the research by taking the time to complete it.
Exam Applicant Statistics

As most of our readers know, NCIDQ has multiple paths to eligibility for the Examination. We classify applicants into one of six routes that combine their education and experience. In 2009, close to 2000 people applied for and were approved to take the Examination.

As the chart below shows, more than half of our applicants hold a CIDA-accredited degree in interior design (bachelors or masters). [Note: CIDA is what used to be known as FIDER.]

The second largest group of applicants were individuals who hold bachelor's or master's degrees in interior design from non-CIDA accredited programs. Combined, these first two routes represented more than 75 percent of all applicants. In addition to their degrees, these applicants were required to have worked in the field for at least 3,520 hours (about two years).

Because the profession has many other types of education, NCIDQ allows applicants to qualify through four other combinations of education and experience. The next largest group, representing nine percent of applicants, are those with a bachelor's degree in some other field who have changed professions and gone on to earn additional education in interior design. These applicants also worked at least 3,520 hours in the field before becoming eligible.

The final three groups represented about 13 percent of applicants. Applicants with an associate's degree or equivalent that had at least 60 semester hours of interior design education and 5,280 hours of work experience represented six percent. Those with an associate's degree or equivalent that had 40 to 59 semester hours of interior design education and 7,040 hours of work experience represented another six percent.

The final group qualified through our newest route. The newest path is for applicants with an architectural education who have been practicing interior design, not architecture, and who wish to be credentialed as interior designers. In 2009, the first year this was available, less than one percent of our applicants qualified through this path.

As you can see, despite the variety of opportunities to qualify for the NCIDQ Examination, the vast majority are those with bachelor's or master's degrees in interior design.

New Multiple-Choice Online Practice Tests Now For Sale!

For the first time ever, NCIDQ has developed practice tests for exam candidates and others to use when preparing for Sections 1 and 2 of the NCIDQ Examination. The online practice tests are available exclusively through NCIDQ's store, QShop.

NCIDQ has prepared two practice tests-one for each of the two multiple-choice exams. These all-new practice tests were developed by NCIDQ in response to a need articulated by exam candidates who wanted valid, reliable study materials directly from NCIDQ, particularly in light of the restructuring of the exam content that took effect in 2010.

The practice tests sell for $75 each. For candidates taking Section 3 (Practicum) of the examination, NCIDQ has Practice Design Problems for sale in QShop as well. This practice problem is all-new and mirrors the new format of Section 3.

Find complete information on NCIDQ's exam prep materials and exam application information on the organization's Web site, www.ncidq.org.
New Educator Resources

Educators - do you need practice problems for your students? NCIDQ is discounting its remaining inventory of old practice design problems. These problems are no longer current and do not reflect the content of the current practicum exam.

However, they can be extremely effective as classroom tools to help students develop their space planning abilities, learn how to apply relevant codes and standards and specify appropriate wall types, lighting fixtures and finishes.

Special offer for Certificate holder educators! Buy one copy and we will provide you with a copyright release form so that you can make copies for your students. Simply tell us your Certificate number and institution name in the "Comments" box on the payment page of our online store.

Quantities are limited and all sales are final. Due to this special pricing, we are unable to offer additional discounts.

QLetter back issues are always available on our Web site.

Sincerely,

NCIDQ
