How do I become eligible to register for the exam?

First, you must complete your exam application and be approved by NCIDQ. After you have been approved, you become eligible to register for the next scheduled NCIDQ Examination. You will receive an e-mail notification providing information on how and when to register online.

If you applied in the past, you will automatically receive a online registration e-mail notification for the next exam if you:

  • Registered for at least one exam section in the previous exam administration, OR
  • Paid the deferral fee for the previous exam administration.

If you did NOT register or defer the last time you received a registration notification, you must reactivate your record to receive a registration e-mail notification for the next exam. You can reactive online at MyNCIDQ.

When should I expect confirmation that my registration form and payment have been processed?

NCIDQ will send you an e-mail confirmation when your registration information is entered into our database. This typically happens within two to four weeks of approving your form and payment. You will receive an official exam admission letter notification two to three weeks before the exam itself. This includes your registration information and directions to the exam center. This letter serves as your "ticket" to the exam, so be sure to keep it in a safe place.

I thought I already paid for the exam when I applied. Now the registration form asks me to pay for the exam sections I want to take. Did I already pay?

No. You paid the application fee when you submitted your application. When you register for the exam, you pay the exam fee for the section(s) you select. See current exam fees.

Do I have to take all exam sections at the same time?

No. You may take exam sections in any combination you choose over as many exam administrations as necessary. Deferrals from one exam period to the next are permitted, but a fee is charged for each deferral. Please note that state and provincial licensing boards may impose a time limit for completing all sections of the exam.

What is the deadline to register?

See the exam calendar, which is updated regularly.

Where is the exam given?

See Exam Locations for a list of exam centers for upcoming test administrations. Exact locations (street addresses, room numbers) are not provided until registration is complete and exam admission letters are issued.

Do I have to take the exam in my home state or province?

No. You can take the exam at any available exam location. Results will be sent to your home jurisdiction regardless of where you take the exam.

How do I cancel my exam registration?

You must give NCIDQ adequate notice of your wish to cancel your registration in order to receive any refund or credit for exam fees paid. You must do so in writing using the Exam Cancellation Form, available for download on the Forms page. The cancellation deadline is noted on the form. Review the full cancellation policy for details.

What is the fee to cancel my exam registration?

The cancellation fee is $100 US for one exam section, $125 US for two sections and $150 US for all three sections. This fee includes deferral to the next examination period. Candidates whose cancellation requests are approved will receive a refund in the form they paid, minus the applicable cancellation fee.

Candidates who initially registered for all three exam sections and cancel only one or two of them will be charged an additional $95 partial cancellation fee. This fee will be deducted from the refund. This additional fee is charged because the $95 discount for candidates who sit for all three exam sections in the same exam administration does not apply to candidates who sit for one or two sections only.

I already registered for the exam, but I've changed my mind and want to take the test later. Can I just switch my registration to a deferral?

No. You cannot simply switch your registration to a deferral. Since you have already registered, you must officially cancel your registration, following the procedure above.

If you change your mind after the cancellation deadline, you will not be eligible for a refund and your exam fees will be forfeited if you choose not to take the section(s) you registered for.

I have a medical or family emergency. The cancellation deadline has passed. Can I still request cancellation?

Cancellation requests made after the cancellation deadline must include documentation of a medical or family emergency that prevents you from taking the examination. Scheduling conflicts, business engagements, STEP class cancellation, inadequate preparation and other personal reasons are not accepted. The deadline for emergency cancellation requests is noted on the Exam Cancellation Form.

Candidates who do not meet NCIDQ's cancellation requirements will not receive any refund or credit for exam fees. They need to register and pay again for any exam sections they wish to take in the future.
